System design interviews when I worked at Microsoft, Google, etc. were reserved for more senior candidates. Sometimes junior candidates would be asked to design class hierarchies, but the most interesting problems were usually reserved for senior candidates. They could go as large as proposing a design for a global internet-scale web service.
