In my 30 years in industry, I switched jobs many times. Often I would accept a job, expecting to move up or grow quickly in the role. But, I didn't discuss this with the manager, leading to problems down the road.
Here's a story of the time I joined a new group as its first software engineer, expecting to run the group as it grew. Needless to say, it didn't work out that way. I'll talk about why, and how to avoid the same mistake yourself!
