President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday expressed elation and excitement as he led the inauguration of another portion of the Pasig River Esplanade project.
Speaking at the rites in Intramuros, Marcos hailed the ongoing revitalization of the historic waterway, noting that the project will have significant social and economic benefits for Metro Manila.
Marcos, along with First Lady Liza Marcos and other government officials, inaugurated Phase 3 of the Pasig Rehabilitation Project called “Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM)”, which aims to restore the vibrant state of Pasig River by establishing an esplanade for the public.
The President said he was “really surprised and happy to know” that the Pasig River Esplanade has become an instant hit among Gen Zs and Gen Alphas, who use the picturesque backdrop of the historic body of water in their social media postings.
“Now with the launching of Phase 3 of the Pasig River Urban Development Project, I am certain more stories and core memories will be witnessed by this place,” Marcos said.
"I am thrilled to see the social and economic development of a fully revitalized Pasig River, and what it will mean for Metro Manila once again,” he added.
Marcos said bringing back the Pasig River to its old pristine glory is “simple yet difficult.”
"Our mission is simple but it is difficult: to bring back the river to its pristine state and make it a vibrant waterway once again for life, for culture, and for mobility," he said.
The entire project includes transforming the 25-km. stretch of the river into a dynamic public space that integrates cultural preservation, pedestrian accessibility, and economic revitalization.
Phase 3 included the rehabilitation and enhancement of Plaza Mexico, Maestranza and Fort Santiago — three historically significant sites within the iconic Intramuros — creating 2,000 square meters of open space.
"This will create a safer, more beautiful, and expansive area for public events, for gatherings, and for leisurely walks. More than a development project, it symbolizes unity— honoring our past while embracing progress," Marcos said.
The President also said last year's inauguration of Phases 1 and 2 prompted the people to set up various shops along the Esplanade, and the public enjoyed the beauty of the Pasig River.
Phase 1, inaugurated last year, is a 500-meter esplanade showcase area behind the Manila Central Post Office. Phase 2, the extended esplanade showcase area towards Plaza Mexico in Intramuros, was launched in June 2024. (PNA)
