1988: Wendy's Superbar -- Too Good To Last?
In this story Bob Mayer samples a bold new concept in fast food -- Wendy's Superbar, a buffet-style cornucopia of taste sensations that combined Mexican and Italian cuisine with a salad bar. All for just $3.69!
Some fast food fans of a certain age still wax nostalgic for the Superbar, with its "Garden Spot" salad bar, "Mexican Fiesta" taco stand and "Pasta Pasta," well, pasta station. Authentic? No. Healthful? Probably not. Cheap and plentiful? Oh yes.
Disapproving contemporary foodies need not feel threatened by the Superbar; it was canned in 1998 and Wendy's salad bars vanished in 2006. Too many hungry customers making too many trips to the Superbar, plus the difficulty of keeping a buffet line clean and well-stocked while also working a burgers and fries line, doomed the Superbar -- but it was fun while it lasted.
