E3 Is Gone Forever... So What's Next?
So this broke the internet, huh? The coolest gaming news convention E3 has recently announced this week that it would be closing its doors for good. This news comes after years of cancellations due to the pandemic as well as other controversies. We're gonna get into it all, folks. Join me as I discuss my general reaction to the news as well as speculate on the future of video game news conventions. Ever since I was a child, E3 was one of those things that everyone could enjoy. Me, my brother, little baby Abney, even Mom and Dad and the family dog would huddle around the couch to see what exciting announcements and video game trailers E3 had to offer. It was never a matter of race, or nationality, or ethnicity, or even ancestry. No matter who you were, or where you came from, E3 was one of those things you could always count on. Now, with the cancellation of all future E3 events, many worry that we head towards a dark future of dividedness and conflict. E3 was like the glue keeping our one big happy family, well, glued together. Without it, a lot of people even said they don't want to live. They don't want to be in a world without E3. It's no easy task. But you must try. You must live. Keep living on the chance that they bring E3 back next year. It could honestly happen. Think about it. It's hard to create what is essentially a world-celebrated holiday for over two decades and just disappear like that. To me, what it really seems like is a case of massive restructuring. The world is changing, and, like a wise man once said, we have to learn to change with it. "E3" as we formerly knew it might be gone, but there's a world of potential for what its future holds. Imagine an E3 phone app with hotlink notifications for every major Game development corporation, sent straight to your phone. Sega developing a new Supergame? The E3 app has the scoop. Nintendo sharing devkits for the new Switch 2 system with RTX? You already knew, thanks to the E3 app. Bethesda is doing something, too, and the E3 app knows and makes sure you know too. And every time you get notified, it's like a little bit of that E3 magic from years past sprinkles onto you and you feel like a kid again on the couch on the floor with the family dog, watching Cranky kong get added to mario cart 7 on the Nintendo 3DS or whatever. That's just one idea, of course. What if E3 developed into an all new video sharing service for developers to post updates, hints, and tips for all their new video games? That's something the E3 label could be proud of. I also thought it would be really cool for E3 to become its own film production company. Sort of like A24, how that's a letter and a number. Movies based on video games have become all the rage lately. Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Pokemon Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequels, even Mortal Kombat all made splashes at the box office, and it's because they were based on video games. If they really want to put the "Entertainment" into one of the E's of E3, there's no better option. Marble was the first company to make their movies into a big cinematic universe, So what if E3 led that charge? We already know Nintendo isn't pursuing this highly proven method of audience engagement, with the recent news that the Zelda movie would be moved to Sony pictures animation instead of Illumination like the Super Mario Bros movie, Thus barring any sort of crossover potential in their future sequel movies. Imagine how awesome it would have been for Movie Mario and Movie Zelda to meet each other in their respective sequels. They would fight each other, like Batman and Superman, because everyone always wonders what would happen and who would win in a fight if Mario and zelda fight each other. This film would be their perfect chance to. E3 could easily obtain the rights for both IP, what with their longstanding history with hosting Nintendo and bringing about some of their most exciting announcements. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros Melee, The Wii, Mario cart, all announced at E3. It's clear they're great friends, and Nintendo would surely surrender any characters for the chance to lift up E3 to the titan of Video game trailers that they one were. So there's two options for the success of E3, and I'm only getting started. I think you get the idea, though. There are just far too many potential avenues for E3 to follow moving forward from here, so I really don't think this is the end for the company. Expect to hear more from ET from years to come!
