In this video, I'm going to show you how to download and set up visual studio code and link it to unity on windows 10, and then unlock its full autocomplete features for faster and more convenient coding.
First, we're gonna start by downloading and installing visual studio code which is a lightweight code editor with really nice features and compatibility with a lot of languages and plugins. We will install vs code in a folder of our choice for better organization.
Then we will add the first extension to vs code which will allow us to type and run C# script from inside and will give us hints and tips about C# features.
After that, we will open the vs code guidelines for proper linking to unity where you can see all the steps you need to take in order to complete the setup properly for everything to work fine.
Then, we will start a project in a destination of our choice just so we will have access to the menu so we can link vs code as a script editor and update its plugin version.
After the project is open we can go to the edit menu and change the external tools to use vs code as the external script editor to work with unity. This will allow you to open and edit unity scripts in visual studio code and will automatically open the unity script in vs code when you double click on them.
Then, we will download and install the main .NET SDK which is a cross-platform open source development platform available for everybody to use. This is required for a lot of C# functionality to work properly.
After that, we will install the remaining visual studio code extensions that are needed for unity which will give us some neat features and tools such as a debugger for unity and code snippets that will make our coding much faster. Then we will restart our PC to let the .NET SDK go into effect.
We will also check out the unity package manager to make sure we have the latest plugin version for visual studio code installed which is required for it to work properly.
The most likely issue you will run into is the Missing .NET SDK Targeting pack which will make your autocomplete to not work until you fix it. So I will walk you through on how to solve this problem. The way you do it is by reading the console and finding out which targeting pack you actually need and then downloading and installing it which will fix the problem and make autocomplete work again.
and Lastly, we will make sure that autocomplete finally works properly and that everything is fine with our Visual Studio Code and Unity linking setup.
