In an interview for Real Asset IMPACT, filmed live at EXPO Real in Munich, Jan Kristian Westerlund, co founder and chief commercial officer at indoor climate management specialist, Freesi highlighted the new EU regulation and how it will influence the real estate sector going forward.
"The implication on the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive that came out this April is that all non-residential buildings need to equip monitors for indoor air quality and controls for sustaining a high quality environment for the people inside" says Westerlund and means that refurbishments and all the new builds need to have this considered. Upgrading existing assets will be "a major undertaking for for any real estate owner and manager" and Westerlund is optimistic that the industry will start collaborating on this topic, finding benchmarks and best practices to help each other achieve the necessary standards.
