Allegations include violating children’s privacy laws and misleading players about in-game purchases and loot box odds. Let’s break down what this means for the game and its future.
The Allegations:
The FTC accused HoYoverse of targeting kids under 16 with unfair marketing practices. The company allegedly used tactics that made it difficult for players to understand the real cost of obtaining rare five-star characters and items, leading some to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Genshin’s virtual currency system came under fire for being overly complicated, requiring players to exchange real money into virtual bundles and then re-exchange those into loot box pulls. This setup confused many players, especially younger ones.
Privacy Violations Under COPPA:
The complaint also revealed violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). HoYoverse allegedly collected personal information from players under 13 without parental consent and shared data with third-party advertisers. This included tracking IDs, device info, and friend lists, all without notifying parents or obtaining their approval.
The Settlement:
To address these issues, HoYoverse had to agree to these terms.
1. Prohibit children under 16 from buying loot boxes without parental consent.
2. Allow players to purchase loot boxes directly with real money instead of virtual currency.
3. Disclose loot box odds and simplify the currency exchange system.
4. Delete all data collected from children under 13 unless parental consent is provided.
These changes aim to make the game more transparent and protect younger players.
