「Learn Japanese」 Kochira (こちら)/Sochira (そちら)/Achira (あちら) as “this/that way”
「Learn Japanese」 こちら/そちら/あちら as “this/that way”
The set of words こちら/そちら/あちら are used to mean directions such as “here” and “there”, but they are commonly used as a polite way to refer to people. It is not appropriate to use any of these expressions to refer to oneself because of this implicit politeness.
Example(s):
こちらはジョージ·ワシントンです。
Kochira wa George Washington desu.
(This is George Washington.)
あちらはどなたですか。
Achira wa donata desuka.
(Who is that person over there?)
あちらはジョージ·ワシントン２ですよ。
Achira wa George Washington ni desuyo.
(That’s George Washington 2.)
