The anchor chain is manufactured from forged steel links, reinforced with a transversal stud (contrete). Merchant-vessel chains are assembled in 27.5 m sections, known as shackles or lengths (paños). Every 25 m a detachable joining link connects the sections.
A standard merchant ship carries 10 lengths (≈275 m) on each side (port & starboard).
During anchoring operations, the chain forms a catenary curve, ensuring that the pull on the anchor remains horizontal for maximum holding power.
When a vessel reports “4 lengths dropped,” it means approximately 100 m of chain are in the water.
Identification Markings
Each joining shackle is painted in a bright color. Adjacent links are marked with white paint:
1 link for the first length
2 links for the second
3 links for the third, and so on
This system allows quick measurement of chain paid out during anchoring maneuvers.
