Ever wonder how a chrysalis turns into a butterfly? I did. So I collected a few monarch caterpillars one summer to find out. The caterpillars attached themselves to leaves after a while. In a few days the caterpillars became chrysalises. After waiting more days, I saw the chrysalises turn from green to black. I later realized that the green shells had not actually turned black but had become clear, revealing black parts of the folded butterfly within. After some experiments, I discovered when a butterfly was about to emerge and I was ready to film it. The insect emerged quickly, then dried its wings off in the air. Soon it was ready to fly away. Please also look at my video of a caterpillar becoming a chrysalis.
