Bears are deceptively fast when they need to be. On flat terrain like this, they have enough get up and go to hit a top speed of 35mph.

In these conditions, the fastest human on the planet can only move at a maximum of 27.8mph and only for short bursts. Bears can run at that speed for up to 2 miles!

They owe their fast footedness to their large claws, muscular shoulders and shorter forelimbs, the combination of which rocket the bear forward at whatever they are trying to catch - usually something with a heartbeat.
