motorcycle chain getting kinks, stiff, freezed (see description for details on failure modes)
0:00 dismantling, angle-grinder, pin punch, hammer
0:06 black residue on pin probably means rubber x-ring was damaged
0:08 one can see x-ring is splitting, part of it unwound, splintered, on the bottom of the link
0:09 another part of the x-ring, on my finger
0:11 x-ring that's not that bad
0:12 pins cleaned from rubber residue
0:13 turning the link with pins, so you can see it's nowhere near failing, just a bit polished on the loaded (inner) sides
0:17 damaged x-ring, it makes chain stiff, kinky, frozen, any term you prefer
0:18 realy nothing wrong with that link even it was driven with stiff link, i doubt it was ever oiled or cleaned
0:19 x-ring remains on the side-plate, esp. on the left side
0:22 inner side of the link, again no signs of wear, pitting, scarring etc.
0:28 notice the small rock....now imagine what happens to x-ring if such lil piece (or smaller) gets stuck between 2 pieces of link metal, ie so it can damage the rubber ring....
this was the D.I.D. 50 MF01 chain
elongation aside, another common issue with chains is some links being stiffer than others, so i've found a chain with stiff links and broke it.
so when exactly chain fails and how, if not for stiff links? pedro mota has some interesting experiences:

so he was essentially pushing it beyond everything it was ment to handle.
