1. Don’t Underestimate how big Texas is.
To understand the vast scale of Texas, consider this - Texas is wider east to west than the distance from Texas all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Fun fact Southwest Airlines was founded because it was easier to fly from Dallas to San Antonio or Houston than it was to drive. I have lived here nearly my entire life and I have yet to see all the best places in this state.
2. Don’t Think You Are Getting Anywhere Fast
In Texas we measure driving distance in hours not miles. For instance the city of Houston is so big that Houston is two hours away from Houston. The city and metroplex is so massive that Houston exceeds the state of Massachusetts in square miles. If you’re thinking about driving across Texas you may want to skip it as it will take you up to 16 hours to drive across.
3. Don’t Be Surprised if You Meet People That Have Never Been Outside of Texas
I have friends to this day that still have never been to a different state or outside of the country. They were born here, their entire family tree is here and they don’t see any reason to make the long drive or pay for a flight to leave the state.
4. Don’t Expect to Find a Great Beach in Texas
Texas has over 360 miles of coastline and not one of those miles has a good beach in my opinion. I think the Texas coastline is quite gross - you really don’t want to go there if you can afford a flight to a better travel destination. The water along the carcinogenic coast, as some like to call it, is usually varying shades of brown, the air is heavy and that sea breeze smells like an oil rifinery. The only time I will ever be at the Texas coast is if I am taking a cruise ship to escape it.
5. Don’t Rely on the Weatherman
I’m convinced the weatherman has no idea what is going on. Some days in winter it will be warm enough to swim while the very next day there could be a Texas sized snowstorm to knock out your power. Texas has a very diverse climate so it can easily be snowing in Amarillo while perfect sunny weather is happening in San Antonio.
6. Don’t Mess With Texas
This isn’t a mean slogan or us trying to sound tough. The saying Don’t Mess With Texas has to do with littering and keeping our state clean.
7. Don’t Speed in Small Towns
Speed traps are very common in small towns across Texas. Some of these towns even make a large portion of their revenue from citing speeding tickets so watch out.
8. Don’t Pass A Buc Ee's Bathroom If You Need to Go
Buc Ee’s has a very clean bathroom with stalls that are like small rooms for excellent privacy. Every time I pass a Buc Ee’s I always end up stopping because the food is good too for a gas station.
9. Don’t Forget Your Manners
Texans take pride in their kindness and southern hospitality. We are a friendly bunch and it’s not uncommon to hear “Please and Thank You” throughout the day.
10. Don’t California My Texas
I have lived in California and I have lived in Texas. I will never move back to California though. I saw so much littering, crime, lawlessness, lack of accountability for criminals, open air drug use. The list goes on, we don’t want this here. So please, if you come here don’t California my Texas.
