Getty Science Up Close - Vincent Beltran
For Vincent Beltran, the term “let there be light” is key to the work he does as an environmental scientist at the Getty Conservation Institute. But he only uses so much of it.
“Light is tricky because you need light to see an object, but at the same time, too much is going to cause damage to the object. So, you need to carefully manage it.”
Beltran works with an instrument called a microfading tester, which shines an extremely intense and focused beam of light on an object without creating visible damage to it. He measures the effect of light to figure out the safest lighting for an object in a museum or elsewhere.
