Tiny Desk contest forces me to grow my sketches into songs. ‘Hold My Own’ is so fresh, I had to keep focused on the lyrics while recording the video.
Hesitant to make it complicated, I have kept this track simple for months, just enjoying singing to it while traveling, learning who the song is to me. But knowing I only have a day of break in the stormy weather to shoot a video, I pushed to finish the lyrics. That’s what I love about participating in the Contest (Now year #6). It supports me in sharing a brand new material and accepts me in my artistic rawness and vulnerability.
‘Hold My Own’ is a bilingual song in English and Czech. Why? Because I love to communicate with those of you in both of my homelands. My artistic hope is that by hearing sections in a foreign language, you will have a chance to move away from focusing on the words and let go into enjoying the sonic textures.
When I play live I project visuals synced to my music and I decided to include some of my visual approaches in this Tiny Desk entry. I use text here in a rhythmic way, putting words up for those who love to know the message as well as for those who are fine with getting lost in the music and witness the text as an abstract visual object.
