The Island of the Colour blind, or more formally known as Pingelap Atoll, is an island located in the South Pacific Ocean. It was written in a book which explored the human brain by Oliver Sacks. Pingelap Atoll had very unique inhabitants that Oliver and many other scientists got interested in investigating. Legend has it that the island was once struck by a very devastating typhoon during 1775, which caused most of the population to get wiped out. One of the survivors, the ruler, had a rare gene which caused an extreme type of colour blindness; they could only see in black and white. Eventually that said gene got passed down many generations throughout the island’s population. The colour blindness the residents have is known as complete achromatopsia. The population of Pingelap Atoll is currently at 250 residents, and the current percentage of the island’s resident’s colour blindness is at 10%.
