After reading Elon Musk's biography by Ashlee Vance and seeing the Mars Travel posters, we were really inspired.
We fell in love with the retro futuristic Mars landscapes depicted in the posters and decided to bring them to life.
Our first challenge was to create a storyline that could compliment the style of the posters, yet be interesting, unexpected and fun. As with our previous hit animation dedicated to Synthetic Biology, this was a creative project done in-between our paid commercial work.
To add an extra layer of depth to the animation, most of the scenes were built in 3D.There are small details that work much better with the help of 3D software. An example being more dynamic camera moves and reflections.
The main team consisted of 3 people using After Effects and Cinema 4D. However, we ran into trouble animating in After Effects when the characters had to do more complex body movements. Additional help came from traditional 2D animators in creating those scenes.
Currently, we continue to follow our passion of making artwork dedicated to the future of technology and space exploration. We hope that with our animation we will get SpaceX and Elon to create some new posters and one day invite us on a trip to Mars :)
