A panel with Karina Fabian, Karen Ullo, S.R. Crickard, and Rebecca Martin! Let’s chat about why Catholics create fiction, and how it can – and should – address the touch topics, even when it means characters behave badly on the page.

If you're writing Catholic fiction, you don’t want to be safe. Safe is boring? Safe is “hothouse” fiction—artificial, moralistic, and honestly, a disservice to your readers. You want “greenhouse” fiction, where your writing confronts real struggles and dives into the chaos of life. You think your audience can’t handle tough topics like violence, sin, or loss? Wrong. The real world is messy, and if your stories aren’t showing the consequences of evil or the beauty of redemption, you're not writing truth; you’re writing fluff. Fiction that doesn't push boundaries is fiction that doesn’t matter. Jesus told stories that got people riled up—He didn't play it safe, so why should you? Your job is to serve your readers, take them through discomfort, and show them where the real battle is—good vs. evil. So, if your writing isn’t making someone uncomfortable, you’re not doing it right.
