Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom will undergo surgery to repair a tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), prematurely ending his first season with the team. DeGrom, a two-time National League Cy Young Award winner, signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Rangers in the offseason. The decision for surgery was made following an MRI on his injured right elbow. The team's general manager, Chris Young, stated that the latest MRI revealed more inflammation and significant structural damage to the ligament compared to previous scans. While it wasn't specified whether deGrom would undergo Tommy John surgery or another procedure to repair the UCL, the surgery is scheduled for next week. Both Young and deGrom expressed their disappointment at not being able to contribute to the team's success. They aim for deGrom to make a full recovery and return to the mound near the end of next season. The 35-year-old pitcher had pitched only 30⅓ innings this season, recording a 2.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts and four walks. DeGrom had previously played nine seasons with the New York Mets and had been limited by injuries in recent years.
