Valentina Tereshkova is a cosmonaut, USSR Pilot-Cosmonaut No. 6, call sign "Chaika," and currently a politician. She holds the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

It first appeared in 1963, when she launched into space, telling her family she was simply leaving for a parachuting competition. Her flight was made even more challenging by the fact that she flew alone, without a partner or even an assistant.
