The First Chechen War.
The 276th Motorized Rifle Regiment, comprising two motorized rifle battalions, one tank battalion, a self-propelled gun battalion, a mortar battery, a reconnaissance company, a repair company, a reconnaissance and logistics company, a communications company, a commandant's platoon, and other units—a total of about 1,200 men—embarked on trains in Yekaterinburg on December 23, 1994, and moved toward Chechnya. Two days later, it was in Mozdok, and two days after that, it entered combat. Its first serious battle was at Sadovaya (on the outskirts of Grozny), where a tank company and several infantry fighting vehicles were destroyed.
On New Year's Eve 1995, the regiment participated in the assault on Grozny. The battalions entered along Lermontovskaya and Pervomayskaya Streets. On February 10, exhausted by continuous fighting, the regiment handed over its positions and checkpoints to the "VVS" and left Grozny "for rest": the men were abandoned to freeze on the Terek Ridge.
