The KGB's Secret Lada – The Soviet Rotary-Engine Car That Defied History

Few know that in the 1980s, the USSR built a car capable of competing with European sports cars: the VAZ-21059, a special version of the Lada 2105 with a rotary engine.
Designed for the secret services, this car combined classic Soviet design with advanced and unusual technology: the VAZ-4132 Wankel engine, producing 140 hp and a top speed of 180 km/h (110 mph).
The exterior represented a new era of Soviet design—square lines, twin headlights, and a modern look. But what truly made it special was its rotary heart, capable of revving up to 8,000 rpm and delivering smooth, quiet, and continuous acceleration.
Although powerful and lightweight, the engine was difficult to maintain, consumed oil, and required high-quality fuel. Therefore, the car was reserved exclusively for KGB agents and special forces.
Today, finding one of these examples is nearly impossible—a jewel of Soviet engineering that demonstrates what could have been.
