The Triangle Pose, or Trikonasana, is a foundational yoga posture that stretches and strengthens the entire body, focusing particularly on the legs, hips, spine, and shoulders. Here's how to practice Triangle Pose:
1. Starting Position: Begin standing at the top of your mat with your feet about 3-4 feet apart. Your feet should be parallel to each other, and your arms should be relaxed at your sides.
2. Alignment:
• Turn your right foot out 90 degrees so that it's pointing towards the front of your mat. The heel of your right foot should be aligned with the arch of your left foot.
• Extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, parallel to the ground, with your palms facing down.
• Engage your thigh muscles and draw your tailbone down towards the ground to stabilize your pelvis.
3. Hinging at the Hips:
• As you exhale, reach your right hand towards your right ankle, shin, or the floor, depending on your flexibility. Avoid placing pressure on the knee joint.
• At the same time, lengthen your left arm up towards the sky, creating a straight line from your left heel to your left fingertips. Your arms should be in one straight line, with your shoulders stacked directly over each other.
4. Maintaining Alignment:
• Keep your chest open and your shoulders relaxed, avoiding any rounding or collapsing of the upper body.
• Imagine yourself between two panes of glass, with your torso in one plane and your legs in the other, to maintain proper alignment.
• Gaze up towards your left fingertips, or if that strains your neck, you can look straight ahead or down towards the ground.
5. Breathing and Holding:
• Take slow, deep breaths as you hold the pose, maintaining a steady rhythm.
• Hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or as long as feels comfortable, breathing deeply and evenly throughout.
6. Release and Repeat:
• To come out of the pose, press into your feet and engage your core muscles as you inhale, slowly returning to an upright position.
• Rotate your feet to the other side, so your left foot is turned out 90 degrees, and repeat the pose on the opposite side.
Key Points:
• Focus on lengthening both sides of your torso evenly, rather than collapsing into the pose.
• Keep your legs engaged and active to support the stretch and maintain stability.
• If you have neck or shoulder issues, you can modify the position of your head and arm as needed to find a comfortable alignment.
The Triangle Pose offers a deep stretch for the legs and hips while improving balance, posture, and spinal flexibility. As with all yoga poses, listen to your body and modify as needed to ensure a safe and comfortable practice.
