This was most probably Ingenuity's last flight. It was a brief ascent to check the helicopter’s systems, after the previous flight's unplanned early landing. Data that Ingenuity sent to Perseverance indicated the helicopter successfully climbed to its assigned maximum altitude, but communication between the rover and helicopter ended prior to the landing. The vehicles were out of line-of-sight with each other, blocking radio signals, as had happened after other flights and non-flight periods. JPL said communication was re-established on January 20 and it was assessing the helicopter’s condition. In the next few days, NASA received photographs taken by Ingenuity of its shadow during and after the landing that showed damage to one or more rotor blades. On January 25, 2024, NASA announced that Ingenuity could no longer fly and retired it. However, at the same time NASA is investigating if Ingenuity will be able to fly again.
