Capture One 22 Panoramic Stitching and HDR Merge
Capture One 22 was released on Dec 9th, 2021. This release features two long-sought capabilities: Panorama Stitching and High Dynamic Range (HDR) Merging. I took some pictures sequences and tested out these new features to see how well they work.
This demonstrates both the pano stitching and HDR merge features. It is a little over 30 minutes. I would be grateful if you could watch it through to the end and let me know what you think. For pano stitching, I created and tested new image sequences, both hand-held and made with a tripod. I also pulled some pretty old images from my archives including a Nikon D100 sequence from 2006. The panoramic stitching did a beautiful job in every case. They have done stellar job with this feature in my opinion. In my tests I found it did a better job than Adobe Lightroom Classic for the same image sequence and I discuss this in the video below.
For HDR merge I also created new exposure bracketed sequences and asked a friend who does real estate photography if I could test some of his files from Olympus micro four-thirds (thanks Robert Alexander). The high dynamic range merging does a very good job, but I feel there is still room for improvement. For my personal taste I feel the HDR merge could be a little more aggressive in its tonal range compression while still retaining a very real look. There is a style of HDR that looks very cartoon like or painterly - unrealistic. That style is not to my taste. I think Capture One 22 does a great job at keeping the image looking absolutely real, but would prefer to have it do a little more tonal range compression in the highlights and shadows. For my tests, I felt I had to do a little too much added HDR tool work on the output of the merge. That said, I think this is a very good first release of this feature.
