Gazania is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants native to South Africa, belonging to the Asteraceae family, or Compositae. The species are distinguished by large chamomile-shaped inflorescences of bright yellow and orange tones. Flowering continues for a long period during the summer, due to which gazania is widely used as a drought-resistant decorative flowering crop.
According to the most common version, the generic name of gazania is given in honor of the Greek scientist Theodore Gazis or Gaza (Greek Θεώδορος Γαζής, 1398-1478), known for translating from Greek into Latin the works of one of the founders of botany and geography of plants Theophrastus.
Various types and varieties of gazania are widely grown as an ornamental plant due to the bright color of large flowers that appear from early summer to late autumn. The culture prefers a sunny location, is resistant to arid conditions and poor soils.
