Animating text or objects along a custom path in Adobe After Effects is a powerful technique, especially for motion graphics and logo animations. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to animate text or any object along a custom path.
What You'll Need:
Adobe After Effects (any recent version)
Basic familiarity with layers and keyframes
STEP-BY-STEP: Animate Text or Object Along a Path
Method 1: Animate Text Along a Path (Using Masks)
1. Create a New Composition
• File → New → New Composition
• Choose your resolution and duration
2. Create a New Solid or Text Layer
• For text: Right-click in the Timeline → New → Text
• Type your desired text
3. Draw the Path (Using Pen Tool)
• Select the Text layer
• Grab the Pen Tool (G) and draw your custom path directly on the Composition window
• Important: The mask you draw will act as the path.
4. Apply Path Animation
With the Text layer selected, go to:
• Animate → Position
• Under the Text Animator that appears:
• Go to Path Options
• Set Path to Mask 1 (or the name of your drawn mask)
5. Animate the Text Along the Path
• In Path Options → Animate the First Margin
• Set a keyframe at the start (e.g., -200), and move ahead in time (e.g., 5 sec), then set it to 200
• Preview: Your text now flows along the custom path!
Optional Tweaks:
• Adjust Reverse Path, Perpendicular to Path, or Force Alignment for different orientations
• Add easing (F9 or Easy Ease) for smoother motion
Method 2: Animate Any Object Along a Path (Using Motion Path)
1. Create Your Object Layer
Could be a shape, image, or precomp
2. Draw the Motion Path
• Select the layer
• Use the Pen Tool (G) to draw a mask — OR —
• Use Position keyframes to create a curved path
3. Convert to Motion Path
• Select the object layer
• Hit P for Position
• Set two keyframes (start and end position)
• Then click and drag the path in the Composition window to adjust the curve
4. Make Object Follow the Path Orientation
• Right-click the layer → Transform → Auto-Orient
• Choose: Orient Along Path
• Now the object rotates naturally as it moves along the path!
Bonus Tips:
• Use Null Objects to control complex paths or multiple layers
• Use Motion Blur for realism
• Use Offset Paths and expressions for looping animations
Example Use Cases:
• Logos following a swirl path
• Airplane or car moving along a map route
• Text spiraling into view
Quick Recap:
• Task → Method
• Animate Text Mask + Path Options
• Animate Objects/Shapes → Motion Path + Auto-Orient
