It’s very common for novice anglers or kids to use live bait or meat to fish with, not pay attention to their line (slack line) and miss the initial bite. The fish then swallows the live bait or meat and the hook can get imbedded in the throat or stomach. The hooks are made to dissolve over several weeks in water but if it closes the throat shut by hooking both sides together it can be potentially deadly. I use artificial lures so this does not happen when I fish. My tool actually backs the hook out causing almost zero damage to tissue. I see this hook deep down holding her throat closed and remove it with my tool and she is good to go! As a fishery manager I always am inspecting fish for parasites, weight, color, and overall health so I can adjust stocking certain species or feeder fish as needed. This is also how I came to be in a management position of my lake because I was the very first to see the early signs of toxic golden algae which devastated our fishery. That story is a good one and coming soon!
