How does an airplane fly?

The weight of a loaded airplane ranges from 60,000 kg for a Boeing 737 for short-haul flights to 500,000 kg for an Airbus A380 for intercontinental flights.

500,000 kg is about 100 elephants...flying.

The answer to our question lies in the wings. More specifically, in the shape of the wings.

The airfoil is not symmetrical. It is curved at the top and flat at the bottom.

The upper part is called the back, the lower part is called the belly.

Let's imagine we're in flight. What happens?

The air will be deflected. In the lower part, in the belly, the air will be practically compressed, creating a high-pressure zone under the wing. This pressure will generate an upward thrust as well as a backward thrust.

The nice thing, however, happens on the back of the wing. Here, a particular effect called the VENTURI EFFECT is created.

What does this effect consist of?

The shape of the wing increases the speed of the air in the upper area.
Higher speed means less concentration of particles and therefore less pressure.

In the upper part of the wing on the back, a DEPRESSION, which is a low-pressure area. This low pressure creates a sort of suction, toward the top of the wing; it's as if the wing were being pulled from above.
