The Rudraksh (Convention Center) is beginning to take shape in the city of Kashi at a cost of ₹186 crore. It will symbolize friendship between India and Japan. Built specifically for the Music Tirtha, the convention center will be unique and a unique example of Japanese technology and architecture. The center's upper portion will resemble the halakh of a Shivalinga, topped with the five-faced Rudraksh beloved by Lord Shiva. Its radiance, illuminated by LED lights, will be a sight to behold. The Rudraksh's construction involves unique materials, from bricks to other materials. Many materials are being imported from other countries. It will be completed by March next year.
The foundation stone for the convention center, being built on a 2.87-hectare site near the Municipal Corporation headquarters in the city's busiest Sigra area, was laid in December 2015 when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Varanasi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The royal banquet and gifts of Banarasi artifacts at Nadesar Palace so captivated Shinzo that he proposed building a convention center. PM Modi described it as "Japan's garland of love." After Japan's approval of the design and the foundation stone laying ceremony in July 2018, work began and the two-story building is almost ready.
Japan has provided ₹186 crore for the Rudraksh Convention Center. The center, being built by the Japanese company Fujita, will place Banaras squarely in the company of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. This two-story convention center, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, will accommodate international conferences, music concerts, and exhibitions, with seating for 1,200 people. The main auditorium is designed to be divided into several sections. Galleries will be built around it to showcase Banaras' art, music, and culture. Parking will also be provided.
Rudraksh Project Manager Brijesh Kumar explained that the walls of the convention center are being built with soft mud mold bricks. These bricks, made using waste from agricultural products from Banaras soil, have been created, making them capable of withstanding outside heat while providing comfort inside. The wooden chairs for the main auditorium are being imported from Vietnam. They will be comfortable and maintenance-free. The screens for the multipurpose hall will also be imported.
Nishiki Training Center
A design and technical center for Nishiki, Japan's 500-year-old traditional silk art, is also being planned in Banaras. This center, run with the support of the Japanese government, will market products produced by Banarasi weavers to the Japanese market. This will provide a new platform for employment for both weavers and exporters.
Modi made the revelation at the India-Japan annual summit in Ahmedabad, during which the design of the proposed Varanasi Convention Center was launched.
Varanasi Municipal Corporation officials watched the live screening of the design launch on two big screens set up on municipal corporation premises.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said, “You know that the ancient and holy city of Varanasi is my second home. The project of Varanasi Convention Center is a symbol of cultural co-operation between Kyoto city of Japan and Varanasi. It was conceived by Prime Minister Abe and I when we visited Varanasi together in 2015.”
“I have named it Rudraksh – the symbol of love, and a Prasad of Lord Shiva to humanity. This Rudraksh will be a garland of love of Japan for Varanasi. It will also be a tribute to our shared Buddhist heritage present at Sarnath.”
