Camping tips + things to be mindful of while solo camping:
Food:
◦ Always use a bear box when necessary.
◦ Never leave food unattended and always secure all food and trash prior to going anywhere, as it will bring unwanted guests (birds, raccoons, bears, etc.) and is harmful for their diet and independence.
◦ Never feed animals, regardless of how cute they are and how much they may beg. Instead, just leave them alone and don’t encourage them to engage with people. When they build up comfort with humans is when they are most vulnerable to our harmful impact😔
◦ Pick up all trash and take it with you when leaving.
◦ If washing dishes, collect the excess water (aka grey water) in a holding tank and dispose of it at an appropriate site.
Safety:
◦ Tell multiple trusted people where you’re camping, how long you’re camping for (i.e., send your itinerary), and ways to reach you.
◦ Try staying at designated + populated campgrounds with cellphone service until you feel comfortable with more remote locations.
◦ Bring defensive tools you feel comfortable using in an emergency situation.
◦ When in remote locations, use a satellite communicator or similar device.
◦ If you feel unsafe or uneasy about a location or situation, LISTEN TO YOUR GUT AND LEAVE. There will be other opportunities to camp, don’t force it.
◦ Do your research about campsites ahead of time and read the reviews.
General notes:
◦ Leave campsites cleaner than how you found them.
◦ Be considerate of quiet hours (usually 10:00pm-6:00am).
◦ Adhere to local fire restrictions.
◦ Only camp in pre-established campsites, usually determined by visible signs or large open areas with a lack of vegetation (if BLM land).
This is only a short list of recommendations, so always continue to learn, research, experiment with your own comfort level, AND HAVE FUN!⛺️
