Knowing what your car is worth can be a challenge and the industry is full of people wanting to exploit your ignorance. Here are 4 of the top auto junkyard scams.

Number 1: When selling your car for scrap, be aware that there are two kinds of tons. A net ton is 2,000 pounds, but a long or metric ton is 2,040 pounds. Dishonest junkyards won’t tell you which units they are using and will pay out in long tons so you’ll miss out.

Number 2: Watch out for auto junkyards who will add the cost of towing to the fee they already quoted. Sometimes you won’t even know about this fee until they arrive to take the vehicle, so ask about ALL charges upfront.

Number 3: Be aware of false incentives! Some junkyards will offer non-monetary incentives like coupons that aren’t equivalent in value. It’s rare that incentives will ever equal the amount of cash that you’re losing out on, so don’t trade your car for them.

Number 4: Don’t let anyone pressure you to take an offer - and only accept cash.
