I wrote this song to connect with my ancestors. It is a meditation on the strength, love and pain it takes black women to survive in this world. When I sing this song, I want to build bridges from this world to the spirit world, from my spirit to yours.

In Toni Morrison's book Beloved, she tells the a story inspired by Margaret Garner.

lyrics

deep river woman
deep river woman

deep river woman
with wounds for your shoes
running for freedom
with two lives to lose
listen for the river sing her
blues

cut through the darkness
the shadows the trees
cut through the pain
that brings you to your knees

listen for the river whisper
free
as she walks
the ground pulls her down
as she moves the moon is her
crown
deep river down

deep river woman
with wounds for your shoes
running for freedom
with two lives to lose
listen for the river sing her
blues
