These movies did not just flop. They crashed and burned, torching massive studio budgets and disappearing from the big screen with staggering speed. While headlines focused on Disney’s Snow White, Marvel’s Thunderbolts, and Ballerina from the John Wick universe, the real story of 2025 lies in the forgotten box office disasters that no one is talking about. Beneath the surface is a fascinating list of films that looked like sure bets but quickly became cinematic trainwrecks.

The first disaster is Alarum. With Scott Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, and Mike Colter leading the cast, this thriller seemed destined for success. Released on January 7, it followed a couple caught in a conspiracy after a violent hotel attack. Despite a $20 million budget, the movie grossed only $200,000 worldwide. Critics slammed it for being slow and confusing, and audiences stayed away entirely. At the time of recording, its Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 0%, with an equally abysmal 16% audience score. The trailer looks amateurish, more like a student project than a professional release, leaving Alarum as one of the biggest disasters of 2025.

Next is Everything’s Going to Be Great, a dark comedy starring Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney. The film followed a dysfunctional family chasing fame through a travelling theatre tour, reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and officially released on June 20, but barely any theatres picked it up. Those that did quickly pulled it from schedules due to lack of audience interest. A cast this strong deserved better, but the film faded into obscurity.

Love Hurts was expected to showcase Ke Huy Quan in a leading action role after his Oscar-winning comeback in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Instead, this February mid-budget release fell into the crowded R-rated action market. With a tired retired hitman storyline, it failed to stand out against stronger titles like Nobody and John Wick. Brutal reviews and weak box office returns, reportedly under $10 million, left Love Hurts as a forgettable misfire despite Quan’s talent.

Another flop came from A24 with Opus. This satirical horror, starring Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri alongside John Malkovich and Juliette Lewis, was marketed as the next Get Out. The film had strong performances and a $10 million budget but could only manage around $2 million in returns. While reviews were decent, the movie failed to generate buzz, proving that indie horror requires more than big names to connect with audiences.

Finally, Sorry Baby, produced by Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame, drew critical acclaim after premiering at Sundance on January 27, 2025. Acquired by A24 for $8 million and released on June 27, it opened in 4 theatres before expanding to 80. Despite glowing reviews, the film grossed just over $1 million domestically. Strong critical reception was not enough to pull in mainstream audiences, leaving Sorry Baby as yet another hidden casualty of 2025.

These forgotten flops highlight the volatility of the modern film industry. Big stars, acclaimed directors, and festival buzz no longer guarantee success at the box office. Movies like Alarum, Everything’s Going to Be Great, Love Hurts, Opus, and Sorry Baby serve as stark reminders that critical praise, big budgets, or impressive casts can all still result in failure if audiences do not connect with the story.

Which of these 2025 flops surprised you the most? For me, Alarum was shocking considering its cast and massive budget. The 0% Rotten Tomatoes score and laughably bad trailer sealed its reputation as one of the worst movies in years. Have you seen it? Do you think the criticism is fair, or is it being judged too harshly?
