After a great first trip with the 100 Series Landcruiser, I came back and wanted to do some maintenance on the gearbox, I took the Toyota to Cape Transmissions, where our buddy Aleric rebuilt the gearbox and torque converter. While the vehicle was there, he picked up a little diesel leak and recommended I go to Udel in Stellenbosch, to check it out. So off it went and I decided to get them to rebuild my injectors while it was there. As they peeled back the onion things started getting scary, because poor previous workmanship has caused some damage, that could have been effecting the engine compression. The 1HDFTE 4.2 Straight Six diesel, is not a cheap engine to fix so this was getting nerve wracking. After some tests we decided to pass the project on the Jannie at Franschoek Motors, to get the valve clearances properly done and then recheck all the compression.
He also picked up its time to do the radiator which we were anticipating already, as well as the timing belt and water pump, which I requested. Just as well we looked into that because the timing belt tensioner was seized up and the belt was already half a tooth out on timing, this engine was stopped and brought in the perfect time before catastrophic engine failure and a brutally expensive engine rebuild could happen. This is the name of the game with buying old high mileage vehicles. But I love this vehicle and I’m determined to see it through to the other side! Luckily we could pop in at Terrain Tamer Africa HQ and get the parts we needed.
