HOW TO SORT RUST - Inside a Toyota Coaster Bus. Step by Step!
Don't let rust become your worst enemy on the road. Deal with it straight away with this easy 5 step process.
This is how we have dealt with ours, it works well but rust is insidious and often grows back! So just keep a good eye on it and jump on fixing it straight away if you need to.
There are a bunch of different rust kill and rust paint products but these are the ones we used.
Here is the process broken down:
1) Metal brush off rust using a drill with a metal brush fitting. Make sure you get it all
2) Clean away debris using a cloth and turpentine. Some people use soapy water but we just used turps
3) Apply rust primer, wait 24 hours apply second coat of primer
4) Apply top coat
5) Optional to add a second top coat or to use silicone to plug the area. Depends on if it is a problem area for getting wet.
What does rust paint do?
Rust paint provides a shield so that the iron in metal doesn't react with oxygen and water in the environment which leads to rust. So while it isn't a cure, its a preventative.
If you have extensive rust or it goes deeper than just the surface, we do recommend getting it looked at and fixed by a professional. Make sure you jump on surface rust patches fast to avoid having to have expensive repairs like this done.
