heathenX Inkscape Tutorials: episode 091 - Speech bubbles
A few years ago heathenX and Richard Querin created a series of tutorial videos for Inkscape, a Free and Open Source vector graphics program that can be downloaded from http://inkscape.org
The original heathenX website no longer exists, however I have obtained a backup of all their tutorial videos and will be uploading them to Youtube over the coming months. All the videos are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license

IMPORTANT: If you click and drag with the text tool to create flowed text, the result will not be compatible with other programs. In theory you can use flowed text then convert it to normal text using the Text | Convert to Text menu, however that doesn't always result in an identical text layout. In my opinion it's better to single-click with the text tool, and manualy insert and manage the line breaks yourself - though that does require more effort.
Converting text to a path in Inkscape now creates a group of paths, so you'll need to ungroup before using Path | Break Apart. Alternatively, instead of converting to a path, select the text and use Path | Union which will convert to a single composite path as older versions of Inkscape did.
