Biography:
Initially called "Composition of Sound" and composed of Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore, the band became "Depeche Mode" with the arrival of ex art student Dave Gahan in reference to the French fashion magazine. At the beginning of their career, the band chose keyboards over traditional instruments because they were cheap and were offering more possibilities than just guitars.
The first single was released on February 1981 and Vince Clarke, the main songwriter, left after their first tour at the end of 1981 leaving the band apparently non-viable. Under those circumstances, Martin Gore emerged as the main songwriter. After the second album, the band published an advertisement in a musical magazine to hire a new member. At the end of 1982, Alan Wilder became a member of the line-up, and together with Martin Gore slightly altered the style of the group. Due to a bad relationship between the members, Alan left the band on June 1st 1995 to full-time pursue his side project Recoil.
Depeche Mode is a band characterized by Gore's obsession for religion, love as a devotion and sex. Even if they chose keyboards, they never dropped guitars. One of their most popular songs "Enjoy the Silence" from the Violator album is the most obvious testimony of their blend of keyboard and guitars. Depeche Mode is seen by electronic artists of the 00's as the pioneers and references of electronica. The photographer Anton Corbijn contributed a lot to give them their particular and strong visual identity that was lacking at the beginning of their career. -
