Imola is one of the most difficult Formula 1 tracks to overtake, so you have to rely on a good start or a strategic tradeoff. We saw neither – all the leaders started on yellow tires, and after the first lap, the top six remained unchanged.
Any choice other than medium at the start was a mistake. For example, Gasly and Alonso, who started from the pitlane, opted for soft tires. It would seem that the soft tires should have given them an early advantage, but in reality, neither gained any ground and pitted after just eight laps. Anyone who tried to extend their first stint on yellows, or, like Checo, who drove 40 laps on hard tires, ended up losing positions compared to those who made timely stops. Why is this? Because the vast majority were hoping for a Formula 1 safety car, which we ultimately never saw, although there were warning signs.
For example, during a pit stop, the Williams mechanics loosely secured Albon's front right tire, forcing Alex to do a very slow lap and then return to the pits for a new set. On lap 18, Perez made a mistake and spun around in the gravel, but it didn't affect his position at all – he couldn't keep up with the pace of the leaders, and behind him was only Stroll, who, although he got closer, was unable to take the lead.
Around lap 21, everyone who had lost faith in the Formula 1 safety car began to stop. And then the same pattern played out: drivers with fresh tires easily dealt with those who hadn't yet made their stops. Ultimately, although we began to see overtaking moves, they were all extremely obvious due to the difference in the freshness of the tires. Before the pit stops, Sainz was ahead of Piastri, but hoping for a safety car, the Spaniard stopped last in the leading group. Oscar, therefore, will gain a position thanks to his undercut.
The same can be said for the Hamilton-Russell pairing: Lewis's late stop will put George out of reach. But Mercedes F1 realizes that Russell's advantage over Perez allows them to make a free pit stop, so they call the Briton into the pits to guarantee him an additional point for his fastest lap. This will give Lewis the lead. Before the finish line, he will have to regain his position, but the team refuses George's request.
At this point, a flurry of activity begins ahead. First, Leclerc rapidly closes the gap to Norris. The Monegasque driver will reach the DRS zone, but having used too much rubber, he won't be able to even attempt a charge.
Having fought off Charles, Lando tries the same trick on Verstappen. By lap 50, the gap between him and Max is 5.7. And it gradually starts to narrow. And on the last lap, Norris enters the DRS zone. Aaaand... The finish.
