We're proud to be taking part in this year’s Refugee Week and to be involved with the world’s largest arts and cultural festival, celebrating the contribution, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. This year Refugee Week, 19 to 25 June, is a special celebration, marking their 25th anniversary.

This year’s theme is Compassion and through the #SimpleAct of reading a story we can grow our empathy and understanding. Here, our Books Beyond Words reading group at Deal Library share A Refugee’s Story.

Books Beyond Words reading groups are relaxed sessions for adults with learning disabilities and their carers. The group read the pictures as there are no words and tell the story by looking at the pictures. It is a really good way for everyone to think together about a topic and how it makes them feel.

A Refugee’s Story by Valerie Sinason and Sheila Hollins with Hina Gillani and Elizabeth Laird and Illustrated by Mike Nicholson read by kind permission of Beyond Words charity.
