LANGERMANNIA GIGANTEA is the scientific name of a mushroom species found in our area that can grow to considerable size. Popularly known as "giant puffball," it is a saprotrophic organism that thrives on the moist edges of hilly meadows and cultivated fields. It bears fruit after heavy rainfall, from late spring to autumn, often in clusters of numerous specimens. When young, its flesh is very white (never yellowish or darker in color). If harvested, it is a highly edible species, particularly suited to being sliced, breaded like a cutlet, and then cooked and served!
