A lot of things could go wrong, but some things are a bigger risk than others. While you're preparing for one unlikely event, something you've overlooked could destroy everything you've worked for. In this video, Kris shares a technique she uses to assess the risks and prioritize which disaster she should be the most prepared for.

Disaster Risk Assessment
Make a list of every disaster scenario you can think of. Then, give each a number 0-3 based on how likely it is to happen:
0 - Impossible or extremely unlikely
1 - unlikely, or never has happened locally and/or in modern history (last 150 years)
2 - likely, has happened before in similar places in modern history (last 150 years)
3 - has happened, expected to happen again

Then give each a second number 1-5 based on the level of devastation each would cause:
1 - minimal and/or very temporary, more inconvenient than devastating
2 - damage that is easily fixed, small-scaled and is probably covered by insurance
3 - large scale, local damage, possible injuries and deaths, full recovery possible within a few months
4 - large scale, long range, massive damage, high number of lives list, long recovery (SHTF)
5 - end of the world as we know it

Now, give each scenario a number 0-5 based on what can realistically be done to prepare:
0 - nothing anyone can do
1 - policies/society/infrastructure must change, expensive, time consuming and resource heavy, requiring massive cooperation
2 - requires lifestyle changes, relocation and/or cost prohibitively expensive
3 - large time, financial, and/or skill building commitment, but possible
4 - inexpensive, or quick/easy, but not both
5 - low cost, quick/easy, could do it today

Finally, cross off anything that scored a 0 in any column then tally each scenario's score. The ones with the highest number are the ones that you should be best prepared for.
