Gaming's Unhealthy Obsession With Graphics
Graphics in gaming has improved massively over the last 2 decades. Games have gone from boxy character models to realistic renders. With the improvement of technology and processes, realistic ultra HD graphics in gaming is not just for AAA game studios, it's also available to indie & solo devs with Unreal Engine & Unity. Both UE5 & Unity Game Engine have the capabilities of producing stunning environments and real-time character renders with no substantial cost to developers. It's amazing to see but is this becoming an unhealthy obsession with graphics?
Game studios will release stunning cinematic reveal trailers to build hype and in recent years, these trailers have somewhat become predatory in that they overpromise. We can look at the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 which had a vertical slice that was 1000x better than the game's release. Looking closer to the present day, we've seen The Day Before go from the most wish-listed game on Steam to being ripped apart by everyone because of its recent trailers. Gaming is no longer just a hobby, it is a marketing ploy from those who know how to manipulate audiences, and a key area of how they do this is through in-game graphics.
