Can Pigmentation Be Removed by Exfoliation?
Pigmentation cannot be removed by exfoliation because pigmentation, such as melasma or age spots, originates from the deeper layers of the skin, where melanin is produced by melanocytes.
In this video, Dr Chiam explains that exfoliation primarily affects the outermost layer of the skin, removing dead skin cells and potentially lightening the superficial appearance of pigmentation temporarily - however, it does not reach the deeper layers where excess melanin resides.
