Niccola Porpora’s "Magnificat" is a work of the Baroque tradition with complex interweaving choral lines. Porpora, like his better known contemporary Antonio Vivaldi, was employed as a teacher in one of the four famous Venetian orphanages (Ospedali) where girls were trained to an extremely high musical level. They were renowned throughout Europe for their performances, both as singers and instrumentalists. The "Magnificat" received its first performance in the Ospedali degli Incurabili.
