Firefly's #BlueGhost lunar lander deployed robotic instrument (arm) to get samples of the Moon! Since its lunar touchdown, it has amassed data at a remarkable pace. Data downlinked surged from 27 GB to 57 GB – a nearly 111% increase in just two days. This robotic emissary deploys sophisticated instruments like Lunar PlanetVac and Electrodynamic Dust Shield, capturing high-resolution images with the SCAM camera system.
PlanetVac is a Planetary Society-supported technology for collecting samples from other worlds — and it has now landed on the Moon.
BlueGhost's mission goes beyond simple data gathering. Regolith samples collected by Lunar PlanetVac may contain ancient minerals formed under extreme conditions — pressures over 1200°C and temperatures around 800°C, as recorded by onboard instruments. Final goal - find water signs!
Scientific analysis shows an early phase of intense bombardment during the Moon's formation, followed by volcanic activity that persisted for long durations. This data has enabled the construction of a 3D geological map of the lunar surface, revealing impact craters up to 100 kilometers in diameter, some exhibiting layered structures indicative of ancient lava flows.
The lander's onboard spectrometer analyzes lunar rock spectral reflectance, identifying minerals like plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. These mineral formations provide data about past thermal and pressure conditions, revealing periods of heating and cooling that shaped lunar features.
