This black bear is cooling off on a rare geological formation on the forest floor. This small pond is known as a “sag pond”, a body of fresh water collected on a depression formed between the two sides of an active earthquake fault zone.
The footage was taken by a webcam operated by Pacific Forest Trust, which manages the privately-owned Van Eck Forests through a Working Forest Conservation Easement.
Pacific Forest Trust is a nonprofit organization that has created economic incentives that reward private forest owners for conserving their lands and practicing sustainable forestry.
