The endlessly looping monomyth of Star Wars, George Lucas and Joseph Campbell.

CORRECTION: In the original version of this video (around 1:15:00), the Editor character claimed that part of the reason George Lucas re-edited the Star Wars trilogy for the Special Editions was to remove his ex-wife, Marcia Lucas, from earning royalties from the films. This claim was incorrect and has since been removed from the video. I sincerely apologize for sharing this debunked rumor and take full responsibility for including it. However, the broader point of that section was not about this specific claim but rather about how Marcia's significant contributions as an editor—along with the many contributions of other collaborators on the original trilogy—have often been overshadowed to bolster the narrative of George Lucas as a singular auteur. This mythologization aligns with larger cultural narratives, like the Campbellian monomyth structure, and reinforces our culture's veneration of "great men"—typically cisgender, straight, white men. All of that still stands. Additionally, it’s worth noting the documented issue of George Lucas not paying royalties to some of his collaborators, such as David Prowse, the body actor for Darth Vader, who reportedly did not receive royalties for Return of the Jedi. This speaks to a larger pattern of undervaluing the collective efforts behind these films. Thank you for understanding, and I apologize again for the false claim in the original version of this video.
