In this impromptu discussion, Core JKD founder Ming explains to his instructors in training how many exercises make no sense for real fight training. He discusses the key elements needed to create functional exercises that actually help in a real fight.

Ming explains the importance of incorporating intent and threat visualization into training. Doing exercises rapidly with no functional purpose will not help in an actual fight when psychological factors come into play. The exercises should have a specific rationality related to dealing with angles of attack, controlling an opponent's base or balance, and maintaining your own stable structure.

Ming emphasizes training the perception of movement and understanding that means action in a fight. Exercises should include upper body defense like maintaining cover instead of just swinging your arms around rapidly. He explains how to make solo training more functional by visualizing opponents and bringing angles of attack to you with something like a heavy bag.
